Evan Althouse, a five-year member of the Richmond Shock program, was surprised at school on January 29th with a four year full-tuition academic scholarship to
Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Althouse attends the Math / Science Specialty Center at Clover Hill High School.
"This really emphasizes what we tell our players," said head coach Paul Ralph. "Use lacrosse to get attention from colleges, but the academics are really what is most important."
The scholarship is awarded through the Seton Scholars program, which was created in 2007 to recognize outstanding academic achievement by incoming freshmen in the traditional undergraduate program at Seton Hill. Scholarships are awarded annually by each of the University’s academic divisions: Humanities, Visual and Performing Arts, Natural and Health Sciences, and Social Sciences. For the 2010-2011 academic year, Seton Hill will award eight full-tuition scholarships, two from each academic division.
These scholarships are very competitive. The Selection Criteria for a Seton Scholar in Seton Hill’s Division of Natural and Health Sciences is 1350 or higher combined SAT score, high school GPA of 3.7 or higher (weighted), honors or Advanced Placement coursework pertinent to the major, demonstration of leadership or community service, a letter of recommendation that addresses the student’s ability to excel in the field of study, and an essay written by the student describing her/his decision to major in the field chosen.
Althouse, a defenseman, will also play lacrosse for the
NCAA Division II Griffins, who join the East Coast Conference this season.
